However, now many college students do not know how to use English newspapers rationally, English newspapers have not played a role in improving college students' English learning. Therefore, on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of English newspapers and expounding the advantages of reading English newspapers for learning English, this following paper proposes a method of using English newspapers to improve English learning.
Keywords: English newspapers; college students; reading; English learning
With the continuous deepening of reform and opening up and the increasing exchanges with foreign countries, English learning has become increasingly important. For college students, English learning is a learning process that needs to be carried out through listening, reading and writing. In the overall English learning, English reading plays a very important role. In 2004, the Ministry of Education launched the new "Course Requirements for College English Teaching." Among them, there are three levels of requirements for college English teaching, namely, general requirements, high requirements, and higher requirements. Each level has specific goals for reading comprehension. For example, in the "general requirements", it is mentioned that "the college students must be able to read and understand domestic English newspapers, grasp the meaning of the center, understand the main facts and relevant details"; in the "high demands", it is mentioned that the college students can " generally read articles that have the general themes from popular newspapers and magazines in English-speaking countries"; in the "higher requirements" it is mentioned that "it is possible to use the dictionary to read English original textbooks and articles in English-language newspapers and magazines." It can be seen that reading English newspapers is one of the main goals and indicators of college English teaching in terms of developing reading ability.
The contents of the existing English textbooks and English reading materials are all classic topics, and reading them lacks of interest and sense of the times. The migration theory of language learning points out: "The teaching materials are only a carrier of what they have learned. To further consolidate what students learn from the teaching materials and to consolidate and internalize them, they should migrate what they have learned to different language environments and repeatedly memorize and use it." The timely coverage of English newspapers can just make up for students' vacancies in this area. The English newspapers generally have a wide selection of topics, a wide range of subjects, and they are closely related to the trend and our daily life.
College students reading English newspapers can effectively learn English. They can not only acquire rich knowledge and a large number of new vocabulary, but also broaden horizons, understand Western culture and customs, and cultivate good English thinking ability. At present, the effect of English newspapers on English learning has not been fully exerted. Therefore, based on the analysis of the characteristics of English newspapers and the advantages of college students reading English newspapers for learning English, this paper proposes a method of using English newspapers to improve English learning.
2．The Characteristics of English Newspapers
At present, the hours of college English teaching in many colleges and universities are being compressed, and many teaching tasks and exercises must be completed through the students' extracurricular autonomous learning. Improve reading ability not only relies on the class intensive reading, but also needs a large number of extracurricular reading. Due to the limited number of articles (including extensive reading materials) in the textbooks and some reading materials may seem outdated and boring, the newspapers become the best complement to English learning. Because they have a wide range of sources, large amounts of information, novel contents, wide range of subjects, diverse genres, and close to social reality. They combine knowledge, education, and interest, coupled with the easy-to-understand languages, lively characters and the constant emergence of new words and new usages.
2.1 Rich Topics and Extensive Content
The content of articles that usually appear in English newspapers is very rich. Some newspapers involve a variety of interdisciplinary knowledge, covering politics, culture, life, economy, entertainment, learning and many other aspects. It helps to learn and master authentic English expressions, language, and cultural common sense in a relaxed atmosphere, and realize interdisciplinary integration. English newspapers have a wide range of topics, combining knowledge and interest in one language. The language is easy to understand and can meet different levels of reading needs, so as to further enhance interest in learning English.
For example, in the 21st Century Newspaper, these different contents can attract their attention and reading interests according to different students' different interests. At the same time, they can also expand the students’ knowledge and contribute to the overall development of students. They are also good for the development of quality-oriented education.
2.2 Large Amount of Information and Vivid
English newspapers are not only rich in content but also have huge amounts of information. Its content is vivid and real, and it closely follows the development of the times. Social hot topics are also often found in them. Most of these hot spots are liked by students and they are interested in understanding. They can effectively improve students' acceptance of new things and open up their horizons. In the reading process, students' knowledge ability can also be improved.
2.3 Clear Main Idea and Internationalized Language
Although the amount of information in English newspapers is very large, it has a more prominent theme, in which the language expressed in English-speaking countries is very real and can be used in everyday life. Undergraduate students can feel the influence of authentic language and culture in reading, which is helpful for cultivating students' sense of language.
2.4 Diverse Formats and a Combination of Illustrations and Words
At present, English newspapers are no longer limited to paper media, and they are regularly updated in online media. Usually, English articles are accompanied by pictures, which makes it easier for students to understand the content of the articles, enhance their interest in learning, and enhance their visual aesthetics. In addition to written texts, English newspapers are also equipped with pictures, illustrations, forms, and cartoons, which are suitable for the tastes of undergraduates and can bring them visual impact and adjust to the boredom of reading. The form of the English newspaper is very novel. The layout will set up some like the world's wonderful, you say I said, quiz and other small columns. Colorful layout is very attractive to students, thus inspiring their interest in learning English.
2.5 Refined Language and Rich Vocabulary
The language of English newspapers is not only concise, easy to understand, but also vivid and humorous, which is in line with the characteristics of college students' physical and mental development. Reading materials that have rich language and authentic fashion can improve their English reading ability and expression ability. Through constant reading, college students will be exposed to new words and phrases. Over time, it will enrich their vocabulary and stimulate their reading interest, thus broaden their horizons and improve their aesthetic appreciation.
3. The Benefits of College Students Reading English Newspapers to Learn English
English newspapers have a wide range of styles, rich content, large amounts of information, and concise and accurate language, and they are highly practical. Undoubtedly, frequent reading English newspapers can be of great benefit in absorbing English and improving English driving skills.
3.1 Improve Vocabulary
In a complete language, vocabulary is essential and basic. Therefore, if you want to learn English well, you must possess enough current vocabulary. At present, in the age of knowledge explosion, new English vocabularies are constantly emerging. The important way that they are known is through newspaper media or online media.
The number of English vocabulary is huge, and there are many forms, such as polysemy. Some students always feel very difficult to do reading comprehension. The biggest reason is that they lack enough vocabulary. However, if you want to increase your vocabulary, it is impossible to only recite the words. Although you remember them quickly, you forget them quickly. English newspapers are rich in content, with a large number of words, and the recurrence rate of words and phrases is high. By reading newspapers, students can frequently learn common vocabulary and syntactic structures to deepen their understanding
The practice of foreign language teaching has proved that it is impossible to master a foreign language without a lot of contact, repetition and use. Practice has proved that the possibility of acquiring new words in the context of one contact is only 5% to 10%. Most words must be stored in memory after 5 to 17 (average 10) exposures. Extensive reading is characterized by a large number and high speed, and reading newspapers can meet this requirement as it allows students to acquire a large number of high-frequency reading vocabulary. For example, each edition of China Daily has 24 editions. The most conservative number of words for each edition are more than 40,000. And the number of words of each edition of the 21st Century English Newspaper is more than 20,000. The general reading materials chosen by the university will not exceed 200,000 words in the basic stage (two years) for a total of four books. Therefore, English newspapers provide students with a steady stream of reading materials. A large number of extensive readings have laid a solid foundation for the development of reading abilities and mastering English.
In addition, new vocabularies and expressions in the fields of fresh vocabulary such as political economy, science and technology, and culture and education are often first spread through newspapers, radio and television, and other media. Students have accumulated and enriched their English vocabulary through exposure, learning, and use of new vocabulary and new usage, thus also enhancing their reading and presentation skills.
All in all, if you read an English newspaper, you will have vocabulary reappeared. Through this way, words will be continuously recognized in the mind and eventually become profound memory. At the same time, students' understanding of the words appearing in the articles in a specific language environment is far more impressive than simply remembering the meaning of Chinese. Words accumulated more, the reading speed will be improved, prompting students to read the newspaper with more confidence and enthusiasm to learn more words.
3.2 Strengthen Reading Ability
In the era of information explosion, we must quickly grasp comprehensive information. Reading materials are rich enough to encourage students to get useful information quickly. However, because the textbook reading materials are not rich enough, their reading ability is limited. At the same time, the speed of textbook updating is not as fast as that of English newspapers. This has caused some contents of textbooks not to keep up with the pace of development of the times.
Through learning textbook, students can acquire more basic knowledge. However, the content of textbook is generally not so rich and has a much smaller range. This results in limited and fixed information that students can reach in textbooks. It is not good for improving their interest in learning English. A student can actively study because he is interested in the content of the study. Therefore, it is very necessary to cultivate students' interest in learning. When a student is truly interested in the content to be learned, they are willing to actively study, actively communicate with others about what they have learned, and can effectively grasp what they have learned. The content contained in the English-language newspaper is very rich. It is totally different from the textbook. It is trendy enough and authentic enough. It understands where students' interest in learning is now, so that makes them really have the quality of students to develop in quality-oriented education. Take the example of several major English newspapers in China, such as "China Daily" and "21st Century English", they daily and weekly report a series of major events in the fields of political economy, science and technology, culture and education at home and abroad. They introduce and disseminate knowledge in newspaper supplements, provide entertainment services, and advertise advertisements and product information. In particular, "21st Century English Newspaper" has published articles on English study and counseling almost every issue, so it can arouse readers, especially college students, to read interest and desire.
All in all, reading English newspapers not only can lead the students to keep up with the pace of development of the times, but also help them consolidate their knowledge of English.
3.3 Improve Writing Skills
To improve writing skills, the college students must read a lot, because first it helps to accumulate ideas, and secondly it helps college students write down English materials related to English writing in reading. The amount of information contained in English newspapers is very large, and college students can effectively improve their knowledge and ability to summarize through reading. There are also some original phrases or sentences in English newspapers, which can effectively cultivate the sense of language of the college students. They can use more natural expressions in English writing, rather than lame "Chinese English." In the process of reading, they are able to draw lessons from the essence, and use the acquired knowledge in the writing process. English writing is a consideration of college students' comprehensive use of English language knowledge and abilities. The improvement of English writing ability requires a step-by-step training process that includes the selection of language expressions, the composition of the article structure, and the embodiment of the textual meaning. Reading and writing is a process of "reading, understanding, appreciating, and finally use for reference".
3.4 improve oral English competence
Many students do not dare to speak English when they are learning English. This phenomenon is very common and the consequences are very serious. Some students may have achieved very good results in English exams, but spoken English is very poor. In the long run, it has a great influence on English learning. Reading English newspapers can effectively change the students' difficulty in opening their mouths. After acquiring new vocabulary and new English stories and accumulating certain language information, college students often dare to try to speak English.
3.5 Know and Learn Different Styles of Articles
Many college students still can't read a simple advertisement after learning English for some years. They even can't write a personal resume that conforms to the norm. One of the most important reasons why they can't write a personal resume that conforms to the norm is that they have never been exposed to these types, let alone being trained in this area. In addition to reporting news, today's English newspapers pay more attention to and strengthen its integrated service functions. College students can read various works, such as travel notes, character interviews, literary criticism and essays, etc.; they can also see other applied styles, such as notice invitations, job advertisements, supply and demand information, holiday forecasting, and letters from the readers. These application styles are exactly what college students should contact as soon as possible in order to change their understanding of the English language and their superficial disadvantage.
3.6 Enhance Cultural Awareness
The culture of a country is usually expressed in language. There is a big difference between Eastern and Western cultures. Because of this difference, undergraduates will have difficulty in understanding English when they study English. The English newspapers closely follow the trend of the times and enable the students to understand the latest foreign conditions as well as foreign cultural customs and local conditions, which helps college students to strengthen cross-cultural communication awareness.
4. The Methods of Using English Newspapers to Improve the Level of English Learning
English reading is a necessary means to improve the level of English learning. Reading newspapers is a common form of English reading.
4.1 Master the Skills of Reading English Newspapers
The language of English newspapers is authentic, lively and practical. It has a large amount of information and a wide coverage. It uses some simple words, truncated words, abbreviations, condensed words, etc., and has its own characteristics in terms of titles, sentence patterns, and chapters. For college students, there are certain challenges. Therefore, when reading English newspapers, you must first find out the focus of your interest, choose English content independently, and then determine the reading methods, such as general reading, reading quickly or skipping, and other rapid reading skills. College students must effectively read extra-curricular reading materials and improve the effectiveness of reading English newspapers.
When you read the English newspaper, you can quickly browse through the layouts to find articles that are worth reading. Extensive reading can be used for other articles. How can you quickly browse the pages? First of all, we must understand the layout of an English newspaper. In the first edition, it usually has "INSIDE" or "INDEX" or "CONTENT" to introduce the current content summary or arrangement. Take the "China Daily" (CHINA DAIDY JUNE15,1994) as an example, the lower right corner of the first edition of INSIDE is used to introduce the key content of each edition. The second edition of ECONOMICS (Economy Edition) is where you can find the foreign exchange rate of the day, etc. The third edition of NATIONAL (Domestic News) is for English beginners, it may be easier to read news and reports about China first, and to absorb words faster. The fourth edition is OPINION (Review), The fifth edition is SCIENCE/MEDICINE (Culture, Education and Health), The sixth edition is EANDPEOPLE/ENTERTAINMENT (Life and Entertainment Edition), in this edition you can find games and other entertainment activities. The seventh edition is SPORTS (Sports News), the 8th Edition is WORLD (International News). Reading English newspapers, We must see foreign news and reports. If you have a business or travel to go abroad, in this version you can check the weather conditions in major capitals around the world.
4.2 Combination of Extensive Reading with Intensive Reading When Reading English Newspaper
English reading can be divided into two kinds: intensive reading and extensive reading. Intensive reading refers to the selection of some interesting materials for carefully reading. The new words should be analyzed in depth for their meaning of extension. For complex sentence patterns, the meaning of the subject sentence should be emphasized. Extensive reading refers to reading articles without checking the words. You can get a lot of information in a short time.
For textbooks, scientific articles, and professional articles, etc., intensive reading is generally required in order to understand exactly the arguments and content of the article. At this time, it is not advisable to promote fast reading, but rather to emphasize the accuracy of understanding. On the other hand, if you read novels or other recreational readings, you do not have to read too carefully. At this time, rapid reading should be adopted. After reading a lot, extensive reading can be helpful to accumulate and master many words. Intensive reading helps to more accurately understand the content of the article and increase college students’ interest in learning English.
Newspapers are another kind of reading material. Reading newspapers is an organic combination of intensive reading and rapid reading. When readers begin to read an article, they will encounter new words. As long as they do not affect comprehension, it is better not to search the dictionary. In this way, for frequently occurring words and phrases, and words that are important for the understanding of the full text can be found by searching the dictionary, they can be interpreted. Combined with their specific usage in newspapers, college students can flexibly master a large number of useful words and phrases and gradually develop a sense of English.
4.3 Develop Good Reading Habits Step by Step
Professor Xu Guozhang once said that learning a foreign language simply for improving a foreign language is not a good way to learn a foreign language. But if you learn a foreign language unconsciously and in the process of absorbing knowledge, this is the best way to learn a foreign language. Reading newspapers are conducted in an easy and relaxed atmosphere. English newspapers have a large amount of information and rich content. Therefore, the use of words is large, and the coverage is also wide. To successfully read English newspapers, students must master a large number of English vocabulary about all fields of life. However, our students are still unable to reach such a high level. This is probably one of the reasons why they feel that English newspapers are difficult to read. How to solve this difficulty? Try the following methods:
4.3.1 Read the Familiar and Short Articles First
If students are familiar with the content of the articles they read, it will be helpful for them to understand the articles. The length of the text is short, the use of words is small, and the possibility of encountering new words naturally are small. Reading such articles first can overcome the students' difficulties in understanding vocabulary, or the back-and-forget psychology caused by the length of the articles, increase their interest in reading, and cultivate the habit of reading English newspapers.
4.3.2 Grasp the Central Ideas
When reading, the college students often skip, select and seize the central idea, and rarely go into each letter, word, or sentence. College students have the ability to read English newspapers. They can pick up English publications with confidence. For example: they can begin from reading the newsletter because the newsletter is relatively easy. When read the newsletter, we must grasp the key points and capture the central idea. In reading, first of all compel yourself to speed up reading so that you can better focus yourself on trying to understand the main content instead of slowing down and trying to understand every word. And secondly try to understand the organizational structure of the articles and clarify the context. When you encounter English vocabulary that you do not understand, learn to use sentences to judge its general meaning. After reading the entire article, check the English dictionary to determine whether the meaning of your conjecture is correct.
4.3.3 Focus Energy and Time on Reading Repeatedly
If the vocabulary of the articles with the same contents are insufficient and the coverage are narrow, you can focus energy and time on reading the articles with the same content repeatedly. When reading, special attention should be paid to keeping in mind the commonly used words, expression methods, basic sentence patterns. You should avoid flashing glimpses. After basically grasping common vocabularies, expression method, and basic sentence pattern of a certain content, it is necessary to change to another article. Using this method, perseverance and time will make you gradually solve the vocabulary difficulties in reading newspaper English.
4.3.4 Make Use of Vocabulary Hunting Skills
For the new words encountered in the reading process, the college students can use the vocabulary knowledge, punctuation, word formation, and other vocabulary techniques to guess the new words that are encountered in the reading process.
In addition, general reading techniques, such as: skimming, reading, and researching are also applicable to English newspaper reading. After the college students have mastered these reading methods and techniques, they can read the materials they are interested in, and they can expand their knowledge background, increase their knowledge base, and improve their reading speed.
4.4 Make Excerpts and Notes
When reading an English newspaper, if you see a word or sentence that you like or think is very useful, you can make excerpts and notes and read it again in your leisure time. It is also helpful for English writing.
4.5 Persist in Reading English Newspapers
In daily life, the college students should read more English newspapers and cultivate language sense. After learning new words or sentences, they should pay attention to reviewing the old English knowledge in a timely manner so as to “remember the old and learn new things”.
4.6 Timely Supervision and Evaluation of College Students Reading English Newspapers Activities
In the practice of extra-curriculum reading, college students often cannot complete basic English reading for some reasons. In order to confirm the validity of college students reading English newspapers and maximize the advantages of reading English newspapers, college English teachers must strictly supervise the activities of college students to read English newspapers independently. At the same time, college English teachers must also be good at evaluation, and actively guide college students to persist in the reading of English newspapers, develop good reading habits, and cultivate college students' ability for independent study in outside class.
English, like Chinese, is also constantly evolving and changing. In the background of a wide range of knowledge, in everyday life and learning, it is not enough to read a few textbooks. In modern English, besides literary works, the largest, most direct, and most popular means of expression is the so-called “mass media” including newspapers, magazines, and radio. Changes in the English language, such as the emergence of new vocabulary, changes in meaning, etc., appear first in newspapers. When they read English newspapers, the college students can not only touch and absorb political, economic, military, diplomacy, culture, art, education, law, religion, medicine, entertainment and other cutting-edge, most modern and practical English, but also experience the joy of learning English. The college students can acquire language knowledge in class and use language knowledge outside the classroom to fully mobilize the awareness and initiative of learning English, thereby improving English reading ability, expanding learning approaches, and improving learning efficiency. In addition, reading English newspapers can also help us to understand the situation in various countries such as Britain and the United States to increase the English background knowledge.
English newspapers have greatly promoted English learning. Practice has proved that the best reading materials that can help us learn English and expand our knowledge are English newspapers. We must learn to use English newspapers in order to maximize its effectiveness. By reading English newspapers, the college students can expand their vocabulary, enhance their reading ability and writing interests, expand their learning thinking, improve their oral expression ability, and enhance cross-cultural awareness.
