通过对综合文献回顾及对所有与主题相关的文学作品进行对比分析和归纳,本文旨在分析倾城之恋与简爱这两部小说中所表现出来的两位女性角色在对于婚姻、爱情以及对于生活态度的差异,发现中西女性主义特征的差异:女权主义在中国的觉醒比较柔和,而西方女权主义对于争取权利的行动更为尖锐。对女性来说,无论女性多么无助,都应该努力争取生存权利,永不放弃追求真爱,收获美满婚姻。

3.3Thedifferentencountersandoutcomesofthetwoheroinesunderthedifferentpatriarchalsocialsystem
WesternfeminismoriginatedinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.FeminisminChinaisanothersourceofWesternfeminism.ThebackgroundofWesternfeminismandFeminisminChinaisdifferent.Westernfeminismhasgraduallydevelopedalongwiththesocialrevolution.Ithasexperiencedtheclimaxofthefirstmovementandthesecondmovement.Intheclimaxofthefirstmovement,literaturewasinfluencedbytheRenaissanceandtheEnlightenment,some“equalityandfreedom”viewswereraised.Thearrivaloftheindustrialrevolutionandthedemandforsociallaborresourcesalsoextendedtowomen’sfields.Italsocreatedmaterialconditionsfortheriseoffeminism.Therefore,inJaneEyre,theprotagonistJaneEyreshowedapositiveandprogressiveoutlook:Herstatusislowbutshedoesnotfeelinferior.Herappearancewasplainbutherheartwasnoble,andherlifewaspoorbutshewasself-supportingandself-reliance.JaneEyredemandedequalitywithmenanddefendedherownindependentpersonality,dignityandfreedom.JaneEyrelongsforandstrivesforself-relianceinmakingalivingandobtainingindependence.Shemadeit.InThornfield,infrontofRochester,sheneverfelthumbled.Instead,shethoughttheywereequal.Itwasherintegrity,nobilityandpuritythatshooktheheroandmadethemloveeachother.Thesearethecharacteristicsofanewtypeofwomanwhowasawakenedatthattime.WhileintheprocessofthefeministmovementinChina,theliberationmovementofChinesewomenbeganatthebeginningofthe20thcentury,whensocialunrest,political,economic,culturalaspects,werealldetrimentaltothedevelopmentofwomen’sliberationmovements,althoughtheXinhaiRevolutionandMay4thNewCultureMovementhavewonwomensomepowerinvaryingdegrees.Thesemovementsarenotbasedonwomen’sinitiativetofightforwomen’srights.Women’sliberationisnotthepurposeofthesemovements,butmoreisjustasignofsocialprogress.Therefore,inthiscampaign,womenarearmedwiththeideasadvocatedbymen,womenusemaleeyestomeasuretheirownexistence.Womenmeasuretherightsofwomentheycanwinwiththedegreeofmen'sacceptance,sotheyoftenlackself-reflection.Therefore,inthework“LoveinaFallenCity”,afterthefailureofthefirstmarriage,BaiLiusuplacedallherhopeforlifeinmarriage.FromtheresolutedivorceofmarriagefailuretotheresolutedepartureofHongKongforsurvival,economyismanipulatingbehind.
Westernfeminismisconsciousandspontaneousbywomen;whilefeminisminChinaisunconsciousandpassive.Fromthepointofviewoftheriseoffeminism,westernfeministsaremostlywomenwhoareeducatedbybusinessmenandloweraristocrats.Theyinitiatedthemovementbecausetheyaredeeplyawareoftheimportanceoftheirrights.Andtheyhavebeeninfluencedbytheenlightenmentthoughtssuchas“freedom,democracy,equality”inwesternhistory.Becauseofthisspontaneouscharacteristic,theirfeminismisnotmerelydevotedtogainingtherightsthroughmen’salms,butratherthedirectquestionofpatriarchywithmovementpractice,showingarevolutionarytension.Therefore,intheworkofJaneEyre,JaneEyreisalsoaboldprotesterintermsofreligiousbeliefs.ShedoesnotwanttomarrySt.JohnandblindlybelievesthatGodcanbringhappinesstohumanity.Thissuspicionandresistancetotraditionaleducationandreligionfullyreflectstheconflictbetweennewwomenandthetraditionalsociety.Atthesametime,italsoshowsbraveandcourageousrebelliousspirit.
ComparedwithwomenintheWest,Chinesewomendonotautomaticallysensethenecessitytoprotectwomen’srights.Theyhavenosubjectiveinitiative.Inthesenseofwomen'sawakening,theyareinfluencedbyWesternfeminism,ratherthanbeingawareoftheinequalityofgenderdifferencesinthesocietyofthetimes.MostChinesewomenaremorewillingtoenduretheoppressionofthepatriarchy.Therefore,intheworkLoveinAFallenCity,thisisastoryaboutsurvivalandmarriage,astoryofanabandonedwomanwhofinallyredeemedherselfafterherdyingstruggle.TheawakeningoffeminisminBaiLiusuismorepassive,soreaderswillfindinthearticlethat,eveninthepursuitofmaritalhappiness,hermarriageisonlyanemptycity,andtheacquisitionofthisemptycityisonlyduetothewar.Itis“thefallofHongKongthatcontributedtohersuccess.”WecanseethatBaiLiusuisstillanoldwomenwithnewwomen'sappearances.Hermarriagecannotbesuccessfulwithouttwonecessaryconditions.Firstly,thesocialturmoilatthattimegavethetwoyoungpeopleachancetosharesufferings.Secondly,thebackgroundoftheheroandtheexperienceofstayingabroadmadethemaleprotagonistmoreopenandmoreacceptabletotheideaoftheheroine.Inotherwords,womenaregainingrightsthroughmalealms.So,attheendofthisnovel,thesuddeneruptionofwarmadeBaiLiusuunexpectedlygotwhatshewanted---marriage.
Atfirstglance,itisextremelydramatic.ButacarefultastewillrevealEileenChang’sbrilliance:Thecomplexandcomplicatedworldisfullofabsurdityandirrationality.MaybethisistherealthingthatEileenChangwantstotellusthroughtheimageofBaiLiusu,andthisisalsothepositionofthistragicimageinthehistoryofChineseliterature.
Conclusion
ThroughtheanalysisofthetwosimilarlegendaryheroinesandthecomparisonbetweenChinesefeminismandwesternfeminism,theauthorfindsoutthesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenthemandhowthesedifferencesleadtodifferentconsequences.IthasconfirmedthatfeminisminLoveinaFallenCityhasbeenreflectedinBai'sconsciousnessofstrivingformorefreedomoflife,overcomingthepainofherfailedmarriageandherconflictswithfeudalsocialnorms.WhileinthenovelJaneEyre,thereflectionoffeminismpresentedbytheheroineissharperandbroader,itincludesthepursuitforsocialstatusequalityandfinancialdependence,thepursuitoftheheroine’sself-esteemandthecourageinherpursuitfortruelove.
Thus,wecometotheconclusionthatBaiLiusureflectsasofterandpassivewaytofightwithcomplexemotions,hersuccessisaccidentalandindividualwhileJaneisindeedafeministfighter.Therefore,itcanprovidemoresignificanceforthedevelopmentofwomen'slife.Womenshouldmakeeveryefforttoachieveeconomicindependenceandself-esteem.Onlyinthisway,cantheyhaveamoresuccessfulmarriageandshareequalrightswithmen.
